Conventional Book Distribution

Each new book that Sanctuary Publications commits to publish is distributed nationwide through National Book Network, one the largest book distributors in the nation. NBN book sales representatives personally represent new titles to the head buying offices of all national book chains, such as Barnes and Noble, Borders, Walden, etc. In addition to chains, NBN sales reps also sell to all independent bookstores in the country. While many stores will order their books through wholesalers like Ingram, the wholesalers order directly from NBN, which orders from Sanctuary Publications.

Upon publication, each new Sanctuary title is automatically entered into the national database of all bookstores in the nation, including on-line bookstores. Even if a bookstore does not actively carry a particular title, the owner or clerk can order the book upon the request of a customer. This means that every person in the country can order our titles from their local bookstores.

  • Distribution through amazon.com. Each new Sanctuary title automatically goes up on amazon.com six weeks prior to publication date. All of our placements on Amazon also utilize Amazon’s “look inside the book” program that allows customers to read the back cover of the book, the table of contents, and various sample pages.

  • Distribution in the Gift Market. National Book Network also markets selected Sanctuary titles to the U.S. gift market at our discretion, using dedicated gift market sales representatives.

  • Distribution to On-Line Bookstores. Again, Sanctuary’s distribution is automatic. All on-line bookstores have direct access to Sanctuary titles through NBN, or through wholesalers such as Ingram.

  • Distribution, Warehousing, Shipping and Inventory Management. As part of its services, Sanctuary Publications arranges for shipments of books from the printer to the NBN warehouse by submitting online and FAX notifications of an incoming shipment. NBN has special requirements for labeling all cases of books, and Sanctuary makes sure that books do not leave the printing plant without those labels in place.

Sanctuary Publications monitors the sales history of each of its titles through on-line NBN reports. We check inventory levels at least weekly and inform our authors when it is time to reprint a title which should be well in advance of depleted stock. This is particularly important, because if NBN can not fill orders soon after they receive them, stores may cancel the orders.

NBN requests that they receive shipment of a new title six weeks prior to publication date. Presales are made months before publication dates, and NBN may choose to ship orders to these accounts as soon as the new books arrive at their warehouse. Prior to that time, these sales are listed as backorders.

  • Distribution and Printing Considerations. Because every book is different, and because no one can guarantee that a given title will sell well, Sanctuary Publications advises its authors on how many books to print on the first run. Printing costs go down as books ordered goes up. Usually the best price break for small orders is between 1,000 and 2,000, but sometimes Sanctuary will advise the author to order a smaller run and then keep a close eye on sales. Normally, it will take more than six months to get a good read on how a title is doing. Since the entire book industry works on consignment, initial sales are not necessarily a good indication of how a book will do long term. Bookstores can return unsold stock at any time, so what we really need to know is if a book is “selling through.” If the same store reorders, that is a good indication that a book is selling.
